A motion and a spirit, that impels All thinking things, all objects of all thoughts, And rolls through all things. —Wordsworth's Tintern Abbey. It would be interesting to study the Poetry, Philosophy and Religion of Mankind, in the different stages of its progress, in order to learn the various views and sentiments with which Nature has been regarded. Such a study would lead us to consider all periods of our race:— the infant period when the heart of man had the freshness of childhood, and in childish wonder, he saw Nature clad with the freshness of its new born beauty:—the savage period, when man looked upon Nature, only as a means of supplying his physical wants, or drew from it a language for his passions; it would lead us to consider the mystic period in human progress, when as in the central oriental world, 14 be encouraged by all, who wish to redeem the souls of men from the thraldom of the senses: not only those books which exhibit the argument for religion, drawn from a view of thosefinalcauses which a scientific view of Nature gives, but those which shew the correspondence of the material world, with our own higher nature, and teach us to look on Nature with the spiritual eye—with something of that same spirit in which God made his creation.

A child may understand them, though he knows nothing of the means by which they have been attained and shown to be true. But in moral reasoning, where there are few technicalities, and the conclusion is but a step from the premises, the obstructions to our progress arise from the mutability and ambiguity of terms. Obscurity of language is not a defect merely in the mode of communication, but betrays a want of the power of reasoning. Words are not only the exponents, they are the substratum and essence of abstract thought.
