That was my last meeting with the boys before they graduated to middle school. I left my card and encouraged them to maintain contact over the winter break and into the new year. Recently, I saw one of them at a neighborhood grocery store. He was almost as tall as me. I asked if he remembered the group. He smiled and said, “Shosholoza” (the South African chant). My favorite records were Chapter two: Black fatherhood through my eyes 29 those that had outstanding percussion, like Harry Belafonte’s “Banana Boat” song, “Day-o, day-o, daylight come and me wan’ go home,” the Temptations’ “Beauty’s Only Skin Deep,” and others.
