There is no incompatibility between religious tradition and the possibility that we may not be alone in the universe. What is exciting about the emergence of the new science of astrobiology is that we can explore the possibility that the evolution of intelligent behavior may be inevitable in an evolving cosmos. In Chapter 1 we have referred to the possibility of life originating elsewhere in the universe as a “second Genesis”3. An aspect of these reflections should be highlighted from the beginning: Our lives are short and we crave for an answer to the question: Are we alone in the universe?
At this stage we could say that the lifetime of beryllium-8 is “fine-tuned” for the conditions for carbon-based life to exist in the universe. What was even more striking in the thinking of Hoyle was to anticipate (before experimental confirmation) the type of reaction that had to take place for the initial three helium-4 atoms to produce carbon-12. ) Nuclear physicists call this specific phenomenon a resonant reaction. It simply refers to the existence of a series of narrow levels of energy (called resonant energy), at which the probability that the reaction will take place is greatly favored.
There does not seem to be any evident convergence in culture at present. The status of the relationship between these three disciplines is of considerable interest. Contemporary culture demands a constant effort of synthesis of knowledge and of an integration of our understanding... but if the specialization is not balanced by an effort aiming to pay attention to relationships in our understanding, there is a great risk of arriving at a “splintered culture”, which would in fact be the negation of the true culture21.
